The Authority of Love

A short reflection based on Philippians 2:1-13 and Matthew 21:23-32

In Matthew’s Gospel, the religious leaders ask Jesus, “By what authority are you doing these things?” It’s a fair-sounding question, but beneath it lies fear. Jesus is unsettling the usual systems of power. He teaches with freedom. He welcomes the overlooked. He acts like someone who knows the heart of God.

Jesus answers not with a defence, but with a story. One son says no, but later does what is right. The other says yes but never follows through. The message is clear: God isn’t impressed by religious words that never become action. Faith isn’t only what we say. It’s how we live.

Paul gives us the deeper pattern in Philippians. Christ doesn’t use authority to dominate or impress. He empties himself. He becomes a servant. He chooses humility, even the way of the cross. This isn’t weakness. This is divine strength revealed as love.

For us today, this is deeply challenging. We live in a world that rewards status, confidence, and control. Even churches can be tempted to measure authority by titles, numbers, or influence. But Jesus shows us another way. True authority carries compassion. It listens to those at the margins. It serves before it speaks.

The Kingdom of God isn’t built by force. It grows through lives shaped by integrity, humility, and love.

Actions reveal faith. Our lives must speak the truth our words proclaim.

Love is true authority. Christian power is shown through humility, service, and compassion.
