Cast Out, Called In
A short reflection based on Genesis 21:8-21 and Matthew 10:24-39
Some Bible passages are uncomfortable. The story of Hagar and Ishmael is one of them. It’s painful because it shows rejection, fear, and the harsh consequences of human power. Hagar and her son are pushed into the wilderness, seemingly forgotten by everyone else. Yet that isn’t the end of the story. God hears, God sees, and God provides. In the dry and desperate place, a well appears. The God of scripture is present in places of suffering. God is especially close to those who have been cast aside.
That same truth echoes in the words of Jesus. He tells his followers that discipleship isn’t easy. Following him may bring tension, misunderstanding, and cost. But he also reminds them that they are deeply known and deeply valued. Not even a sparrow falls without God noticing. This is a powerful image of divine care: God sees what others overlook.
Together, these readings invite us to trust that no wilderness is godforsaken. They also challenge us to ask where people are being pushed to the edges today. In our churches, communities, and nation, some still live with exclusion, poverty, grief, or silence. The Gospel calls us not to look away, but to stand where God stands beside the vulnerable, with humility and courage.
The good news isn’t that life is easy. The good news is that God is present, attentive, and still bringing life where hope seems lost.
God sees the forgotten, and we are called to notice and stand with those on the margins.
Following Jesus may be costly, but we can live with courage because we are known and held by God.
