Gathering in Christ's Name

A short reflection based on Romans 13:8-14 and Matthew 18:15-20

Some words of Scripture are so familiar that we can forget how challenging they are. “Love your neighbour as yourself” and “where two or three are gathered in my name” sound comforting, but they also call us to live differently.

In Romans, Paul reminds us that love isn't just a warm feeling. Love is the heart of God’s law. When we truly love our neighbour, we do not exploit, deceive, harm, or diminish them. Love becomes justice in action.

Paul also tells us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” We might imagine this as like putting on a korowai, a cloak of identity and responsibility. Each day, we are invited to wear Christ’s compassion, humility, forgiveness, and courage into the world.

Matthew’s Gospel shows what this love looks like when relationships become difficult. Jesus knows that communities are made of imperfect people. We hurt one another, misunderstand one another, and sometimes fail one another. But the goal isn't punishment. The goal is restoration. Jesus calls us to begin with honest, private conversation, protecting dignity and seeking healing before judgement.

And then comes the promise: wherever even two or three gather in Christ’s name, Christ is there. The church isn't measured by size, wealth, or buildings. It's known by love, reconciliation, and welcome. Wherever love is practised in Christ’s name, God’s kingdom is already breaking into the world.

Wear Christ daily. Let compassion, humility, justice, and forgiveness shape how we speak and act.

Seek restoration first. When conflict comes, choose honest conversation and healing over blame or public shame.
