Pentecost 16 – The Light We Live By

The Light We Live By

A short reflection on 1 Timothy 6:6–19, Luke 16:19–31 and Cosmos Sunday

Step outside on a clear night and look up. The stars you see are ancient light, travelling for years – even millennia – to reach you. It's a cosmic reminder of how small we are, and yet, how deeply connected we are to something vast and holy. Today, on Cosmos Sunday, we are invited to hold both awe and responsibility: to marvel at the grandeur of creation and to ground ourselves in justice, humility, and compassion.

Paul's words in 1 Timothy remind us that true richness lies not in wealth, but in contentment and good works. When we chase money or status, we lose sight of what really matters. Instead, we are called to pursue faith, love, and gentleness, and to use whatever we have for the good of others.

In Luke's parable, the rich man ignores Lazarus at his gate. After death, their positions are reversed. The message is clear: wealth without compassion isolates us; love shared with others connects us to God.

The God who formed galaxies also walked among the poor and broken. That same light now shines in us – urging us to live generously, to notice those in need, and to trust in something far greater than ourselves.

Contentment and generosity matter more than wealth and status.

Noticing and caring for others is how we live out the light of Christ.
