Christmas 2 – A Home for Wisdom, A Light for All

A Home for Wisdom, A Light for All

A short reflection based on Sirach 24:1-12 and John 1:1-18

In Sirach and John, we meet two powerful images of God's presence: Wisdom and the Word. Both are described as being with God from the beginning, both seek to dwell among us, and both invite us into a relationship that is intimate, not distant.

In Sirach, Wisdom is female, radiant, and self-assured. She flows from the mouth of God, not as an abstract idea but as a living presence that longs to find a home among people. God tells her, "Abide in the people of Israel," and she ministers in the holy tent – a reminder that God's presence is not reserved for palaces but moves with us in our daily lives.

John’s Gospel echoes this with its cosmic poetry: “In the beginning was the Word.” Jesus, the Word made flesh, is both with God and is God. He is not just a messenger but a window into God’s very nature – full of grace and truth. Like Wisdom, he comes to dwell, not in institutions, but in human flesh and fragile communities.

These passages invite us to open our hearts and homes to God's indwelling presence. Not a distant deity, but a close companion. Not confined by gender or place, but present in all who welcome truth, grace, and wisdom.

Make room for divine Wisdom – she brings clarity, courage, and truth.

Let Jesus be your lens – see light and grace through him, even in darkness.
