Epiphany 5 – Wisdom and Light

Wisdom and Light: Living Deeply in Shallow Times

A short reflection based on 1 Corinthians 2:1-16 and Matthew 5:13-20

We live in an age where appearance often matters more than depth. On social media and television, we are surrounded by messages that tell us to perform, impress, and keep up a shiny front. But the readings today invite us to something deeper.

Paul reminds the Corinthians – and us – that faith isn’t a performance. He didn’t come with eloquence or showmanship but with Christ crucified: the power of God in humility, love, and surrender. True wisdom, Paul says, doesn’t come from clever words, but from the Spirit. It grows in stillness, humility, and openness to God’s presence.

Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Not someday – now. Salt preserves, enhances, and gives flavour. Light reveals, guides, and brings warmth. These images aren’t flashy, but they are powerful. Jesus challenges us not to blend in or dim our light, but to live visibly and distinctly – with grace, courage, and compassion.

In a world full of noise, we are called to presence. In a culture chasing image, we are called to substance. This is the way of Christ – not to impress, but to bless.

God’s wisdom grows in humility, not performance.

You already carry light – let it shine with love and courage.

Ngā mihi
Philip
