Pressing On Toward a Just and Loving World
A short reflection on Philippians 3:4–14
In Philippians 3:4–14, Paul talks about letting go of his past achievements and privileges to pursue something far greater – knowing Jesus and living the life Jesus calls him to live. During Lent, we often reflect on our own lives and let go of distractions or habits that keep us from following Jesus wholeheartedly. Paul’s words are a powerful reminder that what truly matters isn’t our status, success, or even our religious credentials. Instead, it’s about knowing Jesus, following him, and sharing in his life of love, service, and sacrifice.
Paul describes his goal as striving toward “the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” Some might see this as seeking eternal life with Jesus in heaven. But when we look at the life and teachings of Jesus, we see his message was about building God’s Kingdom here on earth – a world shaped by love, justice, compassion, and peace. Jesus’ resurrection at Easter is a sign of hope and new life breaking into the world right now, not just a promise of something beyond death.
For Paul, knowing Jesus meant sharing in his suffering and commitment to serving others. It’s about striving toward a transformed life, shaped by Jesus’ radical love and justice. As we journey through Lent, may we be inspired not just to reach toward heaven, but to work alongside Jesus in creating a more just and loving world right here and now.
