Easter 5 – Living Stones, Hopeful Hearts

Living Stones, Hopeful Hearts

A short reflection on John 14:1-14 and 1 Peter 2:2-10

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.” These words from John’s Gospel are not spoken into calm lives, but into anxious ones. Jesus’ friends were facing uncertainty, pressure, and fear. Yet he offers not denial, but presence. He promises a place prepared, a relationship that holds, and a way to walk even when the road ahead feels unclear.

When Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” he does not hand us a map. He offers himself. In a world crowded with loud voices and competing loyalties, Christ invites us to anchor our hearts in him. His way is compassion. His truth is embodied love. His life is poured out for others. To look at Jesus is to see what God is like – merciful, courageous, just.

Then 1 Peter gives us another image: we are “living stones.” Alone, a stone seems small and insignificant. But gathered together, shaped by grace, we become a dwelling place for God. We are not solitary believers; we are a community built on Christ, our cornerstone. Each of us has a place. Each of us carries purpose.

The good news is this: we are not adrift. There is room for us. There is a role for us. Christ steadies troubled hearts and builds us into something strong and beautiful together.

Anchor your fears in Christ’s presence; resilience grows from relationship.

Commit to community; faith is strongest when we are built together.
