Creating a Litany Together
Here’s a simple idea that will create a memorable worship moment.
It’s a way to involve the whole congregation in prayer by building a collaborative litany using the alphabet.
All you need is a big whiteboard or large sheets of paper and something to write with.
Invite the congregation to name words, beginning with one letter, moving through the alphabet from A to Z. For each letter, ask for a word that either describes God or names a need in the world. For example, A might be Abiding, Amazing, or Acceptance. B might be Bread, Brokenness, or Belonging. C could be Compassion, Courage, or Creation. As people call out suggestions, write them where everyone can see them.
Soon, something beautiful begins to happen. The congregation realises that prayer isn’t only something led from the front. It’s something shaped by the whole gathered community. Different voices bring different instincts. One person may think of justice. Another may think of healing. Another may name joy, mercy, or peace. Together, the group creates a rich patchwork of faith, longing, gratitude, and hope.
When the alphabetical list is complete, turn it into a spoken prayer. The worship leader might read each word slowly, adding a simple phrase such as, “God of compassion, hear our prayer,” or “We pray for courage and compassion.” You could also invite the congregation to respond each time with a repeated line such as, “Loving God, receive our prayer.” In this way, the alphabet becomes more than an exercise. It becomes a communal litany, rising out of the people’s own language and concerns.
This idea works especially well in intercessions, all-age worship, church anniversaries, or services focused on community life. It is interactive, low-tech, and easy to adapt. Children and adults can take part equally, and the visual aspect helps people stay engaged.
Not every letter will come easily, and that is part of the charm. For the letter X you could suggest words that begin with the sound of the letter, like excitement or excuses. Worship doesn’t always have to be polished to be meaningful. Sometimes the searching itself becomes prayer.
The Alphabet of Faith reminds us that worship can be thoughtful, playful, and deeply shared. It makes visible the truth that the whole congregation has something to bring, and that even ordinary words, offered together, can become holy.
Spreading the words further
Here’s a simple, easy idea for a social media campaign. Having generated words for each letter of the alphabet, you could extend this exercise beyond the worship setting by posting one letter and its associated words per day for 26 days on your church website or social media. After the service take digital photos of your whiteboard / paper sheets to capture the words. Include in each day’s post a short prayer based on the words the congregation provided for that letter. Encourage online visitors to come back the next day for the next thoughtful prayer.
