Pentecost 7 – Sowing, Choosing, Becoming

Sowing, Choosing, Becoming
A short reflection based on Genesis 25:19-34 and Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
Jesus’ parable of the sower reminds us that God’s word is not scarce or carefully rationed. It is scattered generously, even in unlikely places. Some seeds fall where they can’t take root. Some begin well but fade when life becomes hard. Some are choked by worry, busyness, and the pressure to keep going. But some find good soil and grow.
The comfort here is that good soil doesn't mean perfect soil. It means a life open to God. A life willing to listen, pause, reflect, and be changed. Faith grows slowly, often quietly, like a seed beneath the ground.
The story of Jacob and Esau adds another layer. Esau trades his birthright for a bowl of stew. His hunger is real, but his choice is short-sighted. He gives away something of lasting value for something immediate. We know this struggle too. Urgency, stress, and exhaustion can make us forget what matters most.
Together, these readings ask us: what kind of soil are we becoming? What are our daily choices making room for? God keeps sowing seeds of grace, hope, justice, and love. The invitation is to receive them deeply, and to choose the life that helps them grow.
Make room for depth. Faith needs space, silence, prayer, community, and attention.
Choose lasting treasure. Don't trade your calling, values, or hope for what only satisfies the moment.
