Easter 4 – Through the Gate

Through the Gate
A short reflection on John 10:1–10 and Psalm 23
Imagine standing at a gate, unsure what lies beyond. That’s the image Jesus gives us: “I am the gate.” Not a locked door. Not a wall. A gate. Open, inviting, and leading somewhere.
In John’s Gospel, Jesus is both the gate and the shepherd. He knows his sheep by name and calls them to follow him – not into confinement, but into abundance. Psalm 23 echoes this journey: green pastures, still waters, valleys of shadow, and a table prepared even in adversity. These readings are a reminder that faith is not just about safety. It’s about movement, trust, and purpose.
We live in a world filled with noise – voices that sell fear, urgency, and endless striving. But Jesus says we have the wisdom to discern. We know his voice because it sounds like peace. Like grace. Like love that names us, not labels us.
The gate, then, is an invitation. Not to stay in the sheepfold forever, but to walk into the world grounded in the Shepherd’s presence. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s real. And it leads to a life where we rest without guilt, act with courage, and offer abundance to others.
The gate is open. Will we walk through?
We can trust the voice of Jesus – it leads to peace, not panic.
Faith is a journey through the gate, not just safety behind it.
