Created for Relationship, Sent for Renewal
A short reflection based on Genesis 1:1-2:4 and Matthew 28:16-20
The Bible opens with wind over water and God speaking light into darkness. We close with Matthew’s Gospel on a mountain, where the risen Jesus stands before disciples who both worship and doubt. Two beginnings. One purpose.
Genesis tells us we are created in God’s image – not as accidents, not as consumers, but as caretakers. The rhythm of six days of creating and one day of resting reminds us that life is not meant to be endless striving. Sabbath isn’t laziness; it’s trust. It’s resistance against a world that measures our worth by productivity. We are invited into a holy balance of work and rest, engagement and renewal.
Then Jesus sends his followers out: “Go and make disciples… and remember, I am with you always.” Even with their doubts, they are commissioned. Even with our questions, we are sent. Faith doesn’t require perfect certainty – only willingness.
Genesis gives us our first calling: guard and tend the earth. Matthew gives us our ongoing calling: share the way of love, justice, and mercy that Jesus embodied. Creation care and gospel living belong together. We are made for relationship – with God, with one another, and with the earth.
The Creator who brings order from chaos still moves among us. The Christ who sends disciples still walks beside us. We are created for relationship and sent for renewal – and we never go alone.
Rest is holy resistance. Reclaim Sabbath rhythm in a restless world.
Care and share. Guard creation and embody Christ’s love in everyday life.
