Easter 7 – Good News at the Threshold

Good News at the Threshold

A short reflection on John 17:1-11 and Acts 1:6-14

Both readings today place us at a threshold. In John 17, Jesus stands on the edge of the cross. In Acts 1, the disciples stand on the edge of the Spirit’s coming. In both moments, the future feels unclear. The visible presence of Jesus is changing. Nothing will be the same.

And yet, Jesus doesn’t panic. He prays.

“The hour has come,” he says. In John’s Gospel, this “hour” is not defeat but glory – and glory looks like self-giving love. Not control. Not dominance. Love poured out. At a time when our world prizes influence and certainty, Jesus shows us a different way. True glory is relational. It is faithfulness to the work God has given us: loving, forming community, revealing grace.

Then in Acts, the disciples ask, “Is this the time?” They are looking for political restoration, for clear answers. Jesus gently redirects them. It is not about timelines. It is about witness. “You will receive power… and you will be my witnesses.” The Spirit’s power is not coercion but courage – courage to speak hope, to cross boundaries, to live the good news.

We, too, live at thresholds – in our churches, families, and nation. The future can feel uncertain. But the good news is this: Christ prays for us. Christ entrusts us. Christ sends us.

We are not called to stand staring at the sky. We are called to pray, to love, and to step forward – imperfect, but Spirit-held.

Redefine glory. Choose self-giving love over control and status.

Move from waiting to witnessing. The Spirit empowers us to act with courage and hope.
