Stepping Out in Faith
A short reflection on 1 Peter 1:3-9 and John 20:19-31
Faith isn’t always tidy. For many of us, belief is not a lightning strike but a flickering candle – something we shield from life’s storms. Today’s readings remind us that faith and doubt can walk hand in hand.
Peter writes to early Christians facing exclusion and hardship. He doesn’t promise ease but points them to a “living hope” – a hope born of resurrection, untouched by decay or defeat. This hope isn’t about ignoring pain but trusting that new life is possible, even when we can’t see the path ahead.
John’s Gospel shows us a room full of frightened disciples and one honest doubter, Thomas. It’s not Thomas’ doubt that’s remarkable – it’s his openness to believe when faced with grace. Jesus meets him not with shame, but compassion. The story ends with a blessing for all of us: those who believe without seeing.
In today’s world of facts and figures, it’s okay to ask questions. It’s okay to wrestle. Faith isn’t blind – it’s courageous. It dares to hope, even when the evidence is unclear. And that’s the kind of hope our world desperately needs.
Faith can include questions – honest doubt is not weakness but a path to deeper trust.
Resurrection hope empowers us to face fear, live boldly, and act with love.
