Bread and Water
By WJ (Will) Foote, with Chris Palmer and Merv Browne

New Zealand World War II conscientious objectors were treated more harshly by the authorities than those in other countries. Chris Palmer and Merv Browne were imprisoned for their Christian pacifist beliefs, first in Mt Eden and Wanganui, then in remote military defaulters’ camps in the central North Island.

It appeared to them that the camps were designed to hold dissidents permanently and put them beyond the law. To bring conditions in the camps and this breach of human rights to public notice, in 1944 Chris and Merv escaped to Wellington. There they printed and distributed a pamphlet and tried to lobby politicians. This book tells of their audacious adventure and consequent punishment.

A Question of Faith
By David Grant

Christian pacifists opposed all war, at all times irrespective of political developments. They shared a core and absolute belief, based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, that war was a moral and ethical sin.

David Grant, New Zealand’s foremost author on this topic, draws on his personal interviews with members from the 1980s onwards and extensive other research to tell the stories of these committed men and women, and of the organisation they formed.

Indeterminate Sentence
By Allan Handyside

This compelling story of a World War II conscientious objector captures a piece of New Zealand history that is not well known. The small group of people described here had a strong influence on the thinking of others as New Zealanders later grappled with the issues raised by the Vietnam War in the late 1960s and the nuclear ships issue more recently.

Allan Handyside spent nearly four years in Rangipo Prison, in the central North Island, from 1942–46, for refusing to join the armed forces in World War II.
